Before his tenure with Malaysia Airlines Dato Sri Idris Jala had spent 23 years at Shell, where he held several senior management positions. In 1998, he became CEO of Shell Middle Distillates (SMDS) Bintulu and was subsequently charged with the impossible task of turning around Shell in Sri Lanka, which had lost money for 20 years straight. Idris Jala was an adviser to the Malaysian Prime Minister and served as President and CEO of Malaysia’s official Performance Management and Delivery Unit, PEMANDU.
